There’s an Scottsdale, Arizona-branded subway car (the 42nd Street Shuttle). It’s very indicative of my mental state that instead of smirking and rolling my eyes and continuing to live my glamorous New York life, I’m seriously tempted to go to midtown around midnight with a 40, get on the S, and ride it back and forth for hours pretending I’m home.

According to an Arizona Republic editorial from 1969, the reason was the state’s extreme heat. If Arizona were to observe Daylight Saving Time, the sun would stay out until 9 p.m. in the summer (instead of 8 p.m., like it does currently).

“[Data] clearly show that we must wait until about 9 p.m. DST to start any night-time activity such as drive-in movies, moonlight rides, convincing little children it’s bedtime, etc,” the editorial stated. “And it’s still hot as blazes!”

Usually when I share the fun fact that Arizona doesn’t observe Daylight Savings Time and people ask why, I shrug and say, “Who knows, Arizona is nuts.” But now I know—it’s so we can get out of the drive-in before midnight. All non-Arizonians (and residents of the Navajo nation) don’t forget to set your clock an hour ahead on Sunday! I can’t freaking wait to leave work at 5ish and still have the sun be up for another 2 hours.

Antelope Canyon (by banzainetsurfer)

I have a photo from this canyon framed on my bookshelf, and I took it so you can’t see the ground or sky—just the canyon walls. If you’re not familiar with Antelope Canyon (or general rock formations in the SW) it’s hard to figure out what the photo is of. I kind of love it.

Not going home to Arizona between Christmas 2011 and 2012 was such a mistake. I thought it’d be OK because I saw my parents multiple times this past year, and took some great vacations outside of the city. But I am homesick as hell for that dry desert air, being surrounded by mountains, my family’s cats, my childhood bedroom, Pita Jungle, the best malls in the West, hanging out by the backyard pool… One of 2013’s resolutions will be to visit AZ at least one time besides Christmas.

“What’s the more beautiful view — the Grand Canyon or April’s face? The Grand Canyon, probably. But it’s close.”

- Andy

Oh, so lovely! You know I would never lie to you, dear Tumblr, but here is one thing that’s absolutely true: the Grand Canyon is 100% worth the hype. Oh, and lest I forget, today is the 100th anniversary of Arizona’s statehood. Cheers to us.

My sister and her boyfriend are planning a day trip to Sedona this week—I wasn’t going to tag along (been there, done that, too much Christmas shopping left to do) but this photo is tempting me to change my mind.

No thinking, just stupid.

I loved this so hard. There really is no way to stand on the edge of the Grand Canyon and not be blown away.

Prince Harry Eats Entire Pizza by Himself in Arizona!

If you were to create a fake newspaper for me, as a prop in the one-woman show of my life, or just as an overly detailed birthday card, or even a real newspaper called Julia Daily!, this is the sort of headline you’d put on the front page. But this time, it’s a real headline from US Weekly.

Three weeks after he drank and danced at a San Diego area bar, Harry — who arrived in the U.S. October 7 — has moved on to Arizona, and recently enjoyed an Italian dinner feast with his British officer pals.

Dining at the Little Italy Italian Restaurant — located at 502 E. Pima St. in Gila Bend — on Friday evening, Harry polished off an entire pizza pie (with meat toppings!) by himself, the eatery’s owner, Antonino Buccellato tells Us Weekly.

Clad in street clothes, the hungry royal — dining with a party of 29 others — was recognized by fellow diners, but was able to enjoy his meal relatively uninterrupted.

“The customers recognized him and they were talking to each other and told each other they recognized him,” Buccellato explains of his patrons, who were monitored by the royal’s security staff. “They were polite and no one stared.”

In addition to polishing off the whole pie, Harry is said to have offered quite the vote of confidence to Little Italy’s manager. “All I can tell you is that this is the best pizza in the world,” Buccellato — who co-owns the eatery with wife Maria — recounts the royal as saying.

I’m just sad there isn’t a photo of Harry shotgunning a pizza, Liz Lemon style.

 See you soon, AZ.

Today’s Living Social deal is for Image Canvas—you send them a photo, they blow it up and put it on a canvas print. $28 for 11x14 or $39 for 16x20 is a good deal, and could solve the problem of what the heck to put over our couch. But what’s holding me back from buying it is the question of what photo to use. Maybe some gorgeous shot of Arizona?

I bought my tickets home to Arizona for the first weekend in July. My dad sent me an email back saying, “Great. We are very excited for you to be home. The pool should be warm by then.” First off: he obviously knows the real reason I’m visiting. Second: It’s 99 degrees in Paradise Valley this week, I bet the pool is plenty warm! But my dad (and many other Phoenicians) classifies pools as “cold” until the water temp reaches the mid-80’s, which only happens when the air temp gets closer to 110. I know, hellish—but just look at that sunset.

I’ve never brought a friend (much less a boyfriend) home with me to Arizona, but I often fantasize about all the fun ways I’d show them around. Sedona, Old Town Scottsdale, Fashion Square Mall (what, it’s an awesome mall!), Pita Jungle, maybe Mill Avenue. And if we had more time—Monument Valley and the masterpiece of Arizona, the Grand Canyon.
